Episode 21: Tales of a handmaid

We are back with another episode for intermediates and advanced students.

In this episode, Jennifer discusses the series The Handmaid’s Tale. The series only has 1 season out yet, but season 2 is coming this week. Do you know the series? Are you excited for the next season?

Hello everyone! How are you doing? I hope you are all great! Is it cold again where you are? Or is it hot?

Today we are going to talk about a series that I just loved. And no, it’s not GoT. GoT is still my favorite series of all times, but this series might be number 2. Well, they only released 1 season yet but as it is based on a book, I have a good feeling about how it will continue.

This series, just like Dark and some others, is impossible to just binge watch. The content is just too heavy, there are too many things to think about during and after each episode! Especially women might like it. Not just, of course, but as women I think it is very easy to relate to a lot of the characters in the series. This series isn’t on Netflix and I doubt it will ever be, because a competitor from Netflix, Hulu produced it.

Do you have any idea which series I’m talking about? The handmaid’s Tale. A lot of you may have never even heard of it. But it is a good production with amazing actors and the most interesting story. And just so that you know, This series won 5 Emmys last year including best drama series and best actress in a drama series. That is a lot!

The story happens in USA, but we are not quite aware of that in the beginning because everything is so different. Society doesn’t look like anything we know. Society there is basically divided into 5 groups:

The leaders – the one’s who have power and decide everything (all men, of course)

The leader’s wifes – who don’t have power but have a comfortable life. They all dress basically the same with the same dark green color.

The drivers and security men (called Eyes) – they don’t have power either but have some perks and more freedom than most. They wear black.

The Marthas – they are responsible for the cooking and maybe also for the cleaning of the houses. They all have the same name: Martha. They also all wear the same clothes in a light grey.

The handmaids – they are the only one’s who wear a bright color. They always wear a red hood. Any idea why it is that they are so special? I mean, the series is called Handmaid’s tale. Well, there is one more thing you should know before we continue. Women in the series are mostly infertile. So, the few who can still have children are of high value for the society. So the handmaids consist of this small group of women who can still have children. Since they are so special, one would think that they have special treatment. Think again. This is a very sexist society. Women have no power or voice. So, the handmaids become sort of ‘property’ of the government and get assigned to leader’s houses. They are sent to a family with the only objective of giving them a baby. A couple of months after the baby is born, they are sent to the next family. Oh, and so that they lose their identities, the families choose their names while they are there. You change family, you change names.

Can you even imagine a society like this? It is crazy. And if those women had children or husbands, they were all taken away. The children were sent to orphanages or something like this and the husbands were killed or assigned to do something far away from the wife.

We also see that countries that share the border with US have refugee camps to receive those few who managed or still manage to escape the country. We also see how some groups of people help those trying to escape.

What for me was maybe more terrifying was to realize that something like this could actually happen in real life. That something similar has happened in some countries already. The  culture, lifestyle, changed in a moment. With a decision.

In this society everyone is watching, spying everyone. Who can you trust? The handmaids always do things in pairs, so that one can keep an eye on the other, for example. But they also have spies everywhere, called Eyes. If you do or say something against the rules, the punishment many times is death. With the handmaids they tend to be less strict, as they are so valuable. But as we can see early in the series, they get punished too.

They also create whole rituals to justify and maybe lessen the horrible fate of the handmaids. So, every month, when the time comes and the chances for getting pregnant are high, there is ‘the ritual’. The wife of the family also takes part in it. It is very, very strange for everyone involved.

We also see throughout the series flashbacks that tell us how it happened and also give us a glimpse of their lives before this happened. Especially Offred, the main character. A handmaid. She was married and had a little girl. She thinks her husband died protecting her. But we know he survived and managed to escape. Her little girl was taken and at some point during season one, she sees her again from far away. The scene is heartbreaking.

But most importantly, who controls a woman’s body? Who dictates what happens? Is democracy safe anywhere? Or as conflicts and crises emerge a totalitarian government could take control anywhere?

Season 2 will start on the 25th of April and promises to be even better than the first season. If that is even possible. I am certainly looking forward to it!

So, if you like series that make you think or question things, then you will certainly love this one. The story and the plot were really well developed in season one and I expect it will continue so in season 2. I’m way too excited for next week!

Don’t forget, if you liked it please comment, share and follow us on iTunes or Stitcher so that you never miss an episode! Have a great week! Talk to you soon! Bye, bye!

#9: The devil on vacation

Welcome to episode number 9 of the OTLE podcast for beginners and intermediates.

Today, Jennifer will discuss about the series Lucifer.

Good morning everyone! How are you doing this week? It’s time for another episode! This time, it is for beginners again. We are going to talk about… the devil? You can ask me: but the devil? What do you mean? Yes, the devil 😊 I even have a picture with the devil’s wings that I took during Comic Con last year. You can see the picture in our website: onthelastepisode.com/09b

20171209_125203
Do you know the series called Lucifer? I like it a lot! It is a very funny story. Who knew the devil could be funny? The series Lucifer is about Lucifer, of course. The devil was tired of being alone in hell so he decided to take a vacation. And what better place to do that then in the city of angels? So he went to Los Angeles. There, he bought a nightclub.
What I think is so funny about this series is also the fact that the Devil has a British accent and lives in US. He is very charming and always gets people to do what he wants. But he doesn’t need to hurt them for that. He also has a special power that he can make people tell him their darkest secrets and desires. Well, this works with everyone except one person, a female detective.
Lucifer and the detective meet when a singer that Lucifer helped become famous gets killed in front of him. Lucifer wants to help solve the crime, but the detective doesn’t want his help. When he tries to use his powers of persuasion with her, it doesn’t work. She is immune to him. He then gets curious and becomes a consultant for the police, so that he can be near her and figure out why she is different.
During the series we also see the difficult relationship he has with his father and some of his brothers, but especially with Amenadiel. Lucifer is determined not to go back to hell. He even cuts off his wings to make sure this wouldn’t be possible. God sends Amenadiel after some time to convince Lucifer to go back to hell, as it can’t stay without a boss for very long.

The series also makes us question a few things. Like how we sometimes form an idea about someone based on what we heard or on how the person looks like. Many times we can get the wrong idea. Just like with Lucifer. Is he evil or did he have to do evil things because of the place he was?
Lucifer tells many people who he really is but only very few people believe him. But from time to time he has to show his true face to some bad guys. He is immortal but for some reason, when he is near the detective, he can get hurt and he even bleeds. Lucifer tries telling Chloe, the detective, who he really is but of course she still doesn’t believe it.
The series is in its third season and it’s getting better actually. The story and the plot are getting more and more interesting. Do you watch Lucifer? Do you like it? If you don’t watch it yet, will you give the Devil a chance now?

#8: A hero coming home

Welcome to episode number 8 of the OTLE podcast for beginners and intermediates.

Today, Jennifer will discuss about the movie Spider man – Homecoming. Have you watched it? It is a great Marvel movie!

Read Full Transcript

Good morning everyone! How are you doing this week? It’s time for another episode! This time, it is for beginners again. Do you have any idea what we are going to talk about today? Yep, you are right! Spider man!
I am not a big Spider Man fan. This is probably why I waited so long to watch Spider Man Homecoming. This new spider man is amazing! It is very easy to relate to him! I like that we don’t have to see again how he got his powers. We just see Peter Parker as a teenager trying to find his place. As a teenager, he has normal teenager problems. And he is not exactly the most popular person in school. He is sort of a nerd.
Something that I also like very much about this new Spider Man, is that Tony Stark is helping him, trying to be his mentor. Life is hard enough as a teenager. So I think it was very smart to use Tony Stark as a role model for him. And who doesn’t like Tony Stark? I just love the guy! Maybe they thought that, even if people don’t like the idea, if they like Tony Stark and see him often enough it will be okay. Well, it worked! Some people even say that Tony appeared too much in another superhero’s movie. I don’t know, I liked this balance.
Peter is still learning how to use his powers and is still very naïve about so many things. He certainly needs guidance and help from someone with more experience. Being a superhero is a big responsibility. Tony also gives peter a new suit and he spends a good part of the movie trying to figure out everything this new super intelligent suit can do. There were some very funny scenes there.
It is a new trend to make those hero movies funnier. Not just drama and action, but also to make people laugh. I haven’t seen Thor Ragnarok but from what I hear they went too far with that one. But with Spider man I think they found an almost perfect balance between everything.
The movie starts when Peter goes back home after helping the Avengers in Berlin. This happened in the movie ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (in case you don’t remember or haven’t watched the movie). Of course, Peter is very excited. He just fought side by side with some of his heroes. He also knows now how it feels to help people, to make a difference. He is so eager to help and make a difference that he ends up putting himself and other people in danger sometimes. No one ever said being a super hero was going to be easy, Peter! I also loved the scene when Peter’s best friend finds out that he is Spider man. That was so funny!
So, if you are looking for a movie that yes, has action but not too much and that is funny and is just easy to watch you will like Spider man, even if you are like me and not a previous big fan of Peter Parker. Enjoy!
If you already watched it, let me know what you think! Did you like it? Do you think it was better or worse than the other Spider man movies? Which was your favorite part? If you liked it please comment, share and leave us a review! Talk to you next week! Bye bye!

Good morning! It’s been a long long time, people! How have you been? How is the new year treating you? Are you improving your English? Did you maybe start classes? Point is, never stop having contact with the language and learning new things.
Today I’m going to talk about one of my favorite series, Outlander. I wanted to talk about it for quite some time already, but somehow Always decided to talk about something else. Or maybe it’s because there is so much to tell, that I’m afraid I won’t do a good job of it. And the series and the books are so great! They deserve a well thought review.
So, what’s it all about then? Why do I like it so much? When you first hear or read a summary about the story many men go like, this is a romance. So, it’s just for girls. And they are not completely wrong. But the story goes way beyond just a love story. In the beginning of the story we basically have 2 lines of time: 1945 and 1743, so 200 years in the past.
The story begins with the end of the Second World War. Claire, one of the main characters is a nurse. She hasn’t seen her husband for years. They had gotten married just at the beginning of the war. Claire and Frank decide to go to Scotland on a second honeymoon, so that they can get to know each other again and Frank, who is a Historian, can research about his family history there. This is also around the time for Halloween.

They are enjoying each other and Scotland very much. It seems like life is going to get back to normal after all. Even after Claire saw so many awful things during the war, while Frank had to work with the intelligence department. They visit many historical places, some of them where a member of his Family, Jack Randal, supposedly stayed or had been at some point.

Frank also gets acquainted with the local priest, as he is a history buff and has gathered many documents about the local history over time. They spend a lot of time together, trying to find documents about Frank‘s great grandfather and discussing history. Meanwhile, Claire talks to the housemaid. We find out later on, that she is some sort of druid. She is also focused with her new passion: botany. On Halloween night, they follow a group of druids to a circle of stones, a bit similar to Stonehenge called Craig na Dun. There they see them perform a ritual, dancing around the stones. In the books, she forgets a handkerchief there. In the series she wants to collect a plant and that’s why she decides to go back alone later that day.
That’s when the story begins. When Claire touches one of the stones she gets unconscious. When she wakes up again she realizes that her car is gone, as well as the road that she took to get there. She doesn’t know it yet, but she just travelled 200 years to the past. The world she knows is gone. Her husband doesn’t exist yet. She is alone in a time that’s not hers. She hears guns being fired and she starts running. At some point she meets a man by the river who looks just like her husband Frank. To her surprise, that’s not Frank, but his great grandfather Black Jack Randal. And he has nothing to do with the kind and gentle Frank. As he was attacking her, she was saved by a stranger. He is one of the Scots that were fighting the British soldiers. By the way, Claire is British. She is also sort of their enemy.
This stranger takes her with him to a cabin, where his friends are gathered. That’s when she finally meets Jamie. The second or third main character from this story. The first book and season of the series are focused on Claire trying to figure out how to survive and get back home to Frank. Claire but also we get to know during this time a little bit about how it was when there were still clans in Scotland. How their society was divided, their habits.
I love history. So for me, series like this or stories like this are a gift. Because I can learn and at the same time enjoy a nice story. When there is a good dose of romance, battles and intrigue it’s even better! Many found the second season a bit boring after all the excitement from season 1. And I can understand. In book and season 2 the focus is more on the political side of things. Claire will also try to change the past in season 2. Will she succeed? She wants to avoid the death of many people. But I found season 2 fundamental for season 3. It helps understand a lot of decisions made by the main characters.
So yes, if you are watching season 2 and thinking: man this is boring! Just hold on! Get over it and get ready for season 3! It is totally worth it! My favorite book so far is book 4, so I am looking forward to see the new season this year. Right now I am reading book 6 and it is good! Book 5 was very long and the first half was quite boring. But towards the end it got very interesting again! You will see that season 2 is basically in France. And the focus is around the whole Jacobite movement. Claire and Jamie try to avoid a war. If you ever wondered how life in the French court was, you will like this season too. The rhythm of season 2 is a bit like Downton Abbey. We see a lot of daily life. I found it quite interesting nonetheless.
In season 3 we will see quite a few different places: USA, England, Scotland, the Caribbean… And in season 3 time goes by very quickly, we see a summary of what happens in something like 20 years of their lives. And we will meet quite a few different people who will be very important for the future of the story and that will cross paths with our main characters quite a few times.
So, what do you think of Outlander? Have you watched it yet? If yes, what did you think? Are you anxious for season 4? And if you have never watched it. Do you think you would give the series a chance? Oh, by the way. If you are watching season 1, you better be prepared for episode 15!
I wish you an amazing week! Talk to you soon everyone! Bye bye!

What’s up everyone! How are you this week? And the year is passing so fast! We are already in the middle of February! How was your 2018 so far? Are you prepared to make it an amazing year?
This week we will talk about the movie The Circle. Did you see it? If yes, what did you think? Did you like it? I liked it!
Emma Watson is Mae, one of the main characters of this movie. She is poor, she doesn’t have many opportunities. Her best friend Annie works for a big and famous company called: The Circle. This is a big tech company that is a mixture of Google, Facebook and much more in just one company. With Annie’s help, Mae also gets a job at the company and is very happy. She has now a good salary, benefits…
The company’s moto is that: sharing is caring. And they believe that knowing is good, but knowing everything is better. Does that sound familiar, maybe?
She and the other employees live and spend all their free time inside the company, doing things with the colleagues and sharing. The company develops a new type of camera and they want people to be transparent. What does that mean? To have a camera recording everything you see and do 24 hours a day, every day. With only a few offline minutes when you go to the toilet.
The movie is very interesting and makes you think and question a few things , especially about social media and its use. I really like how the movie criticizes social media. How we all share more and more online. And how we will probably share even more in the future. What about our private life?
The relationship between Mae and her family and friends also changed. Mae changes after she starts to work for The Circle. She doesn’t visit her family so often. She is always busy or doing something inside the company.
I don’t want to give many spoilers. Maybe you didn’t watch the movie!
But there are a few surprises!
Sharing can be good, but when is it too much? Can it be dangerous? Or liberating? Would you accept to have a camera recording everything
you do, 24 hours a day? Like an endless Big Brother? Mae has to deal with those questions at some point during the movie.

Do you think it could be good if people couldn’t lie or hide? What about the people who don’t want to be part of it? Today already people who
don’t use any social media are already considered strange. Do you think total transparency is good? Why? If you like technology, a bit of a
suspense, a good story you will like this movie! It also has some amazing actors!

Is there anything you did not like about the movie? And if you didn’t watch it. Do you want to watch it now? Just tell me what you think! I
hope you enjoyed it. And please yes, like, share, comment on iTunes or on our website. We always love to hear from you. And its also very
very important for us to see what you want, what you don’t want. What you like, what you don’t like. Okay guys? So, I will talk to you soon
again on the next episode! Bye bye!

#5: 12 Monkeys to change the past

Download the transcript HERE

Hello everyone! How are you this week? Are you ready for a new episode? This week we talk about the series called 12 Monkeys.
There are a lot of series about the apocalipse or a post apocaliptical world. There are also some series about time traveling. But there are not many that have both.
12 Monkeys is about a group of people trying to change the past. They want to do that so that 6 billion people don’t die because of a plague. This plague kills almost everyone and because of that society as we know it doesn’t exist anymore. No government, no laws.
A small group of scientists create a time traveling machine. In 2042 they send a man back to the past. This man has to find the person responsible for the plague and stop him. Every time he gets a new information or accomplishes his goal, he goes back to the future. He travels to the past and to the future all the time. But very soon he understands that stopping the plague isn’t as easy as stopping a man.
Season 3 finished and season 4 was already confirmed. This series isn’t an expensive production like GOT, so there are some mistakes, some effects aren’t so good. But the story is in general well developped. It also makes you ask questions like:
Is it possible to change the past?
Is it possible to change the future?
If you change the future, what could be the consequences?
There are many moments when I had to stop the video and ask myself: is this possible? I am not so good with numbers, but I love learning about theories. And in this series you can find some very interesting ideas. Some crazy. Some not so crazy.
Do you know what a paradox is? In the series, you see a paradox when 2 things from 2 different times touch or are very close. This creates an explosion. If time is not a line can this happen? Do you believe one day we can travel to the past? And to the future? Where and when would you go?
In every season we have a new enemy. Like the next phase on a video game that is more difficult. The criativity of the producers and people writing this series is amazing. When you think they found the person responsible, think again.
I am not sure how many more seasons they can do that, though. After a time it gets boring. But I must say that the name, the identity of the witness was a surprise, a big big surprise.
Do you watch 12 Monkeys? What do you think? Are you excited for season 4 next year? If you don’t watch it, are you curious now? Let me know what you think! And don’t forget to share, comment and like us. Talk to you on the next episode! Bye bye!

#4 – Guardians of what now

Download the Transcript HERE

Good evening, people! How are you guys? How was the week? I hope it was really really good and productive. And are you ready for this week’s episode? Well, this episode is about a movie that many many people were waiting for. Do you have any idea what movie it is? It is Guardians of the Galaxy Part 2!

I watched the second part of Guardians of The Galaxy this weekend. Well, last weekend I should say. When you hear it, it’s gonna be some time in the future. I must say, I prefered the first one. I think number one was more or better balanced maybe. In this movie I thought some of the jokes were forced and the plot or story line had some problems. Groot was completely useless but soo cute and sweet. But why would you take someone like Groot or baby Groot on those dangerous missions? This is something I did not understand. It would make more sense to leave him somewhere safe. Cause he can’t fight so why put him in danger, right? I think, I will never get used to that racoon. But well, it’s Hollywood, so everything is possible, right? But yeah, the racoon still bugs me. Strange strange guardian. The movie is a Marvel production, so I don’t need to say that the effects were perfect! I don’t remember the first movie so well, but in this one there are a lot of items from the 80s and 90s. From the music that is a very important part of the movie and of Peter Quill’s life to Pacman. I mean yeah, we see a few references of Pacman during the movie as well. It is funny to try to find those things or clues inside the movie. Just like they do with those (easter)eggs, right in some stories. This is really cool. I like it.

In movie number 2, the guardians have to save the galaxy again. This time we also see some family members. Gamora’s sister Nebula is back and we can understand better what happened to them. Why the relationship of the sisters is so complicated. We also learn that Thanos, the father, hurt Nebula and that everything was always a competition for Gamora. But the most important family member we meet in this movie is Quill’s father. Quill’s mother was human but he never knew who or what his father was. His mother used to say he was from the stars. We find out that his father is called Ego and that he is a celestial being. Just like a god. I must admit that I did not understand what exactly Ego wanted with his son. But I also don’t want to give you many spoilers in case you did not watch it until now.

We also see Yondu again. He is the one who kidnaped Quill when he was young and raised him. Now we discover why. The movie starts when the guardians are fighting a monster to protect some powerful batteries. The people who hired them to do that are called Sovereign people. They are golden and perfect. They think they are superior to the other races. When Rocket (the racoon) steals some batteries from them, they aren’t very happy. As you can imagine. I think it is nice to see how all those different races from different planets with very different habits and cultures can work together, be friends. It gives me hope that maybe one day people will be more tolerant and patient with everyone and everything that is a bit different from them. So guys, did you watch the Guardians of the Galaxy already? Have you seen it? And if you did, what did you think? Did you like the movie too? Do you prefer movie number one? What did you like? What didn’t you like? And also if you did not watch it yet, would you like to watch it after our small episode about it? As always, please just comment, share with your friends if you liked it, and if you have friends who are learning English, please send them the link. And tell us what you think. And also, we are always open for new ideas for new episodes. Okay guys? So, talk to you soon, on our next episode. Bye bye!

#3 – The Great Wall

Download Transcript

Hello hello and good morning from rainy Floripa! How are you guys? I hope everyone is doing really really well. And are you ready for this week’s episode? I know it’s been quite  a while. Specially for the beginners podcast. So, today we are going to talk about the movie called: The Great wall. Did you watch the Great Wall? It is a great movie! Maybe you know some of the actors like Mat Damon or Pedro Pascal, who played Oberyn in Game of Thrones.

This movie is about a  group of Europeans who go to China looking for black powder. That means: gun powder. They were not sure it existed, but some people said they saw it. During the journey, many men die. One night, something attacks them and kills 2 men. Will cuts off the arm from one of this creatures and kills it. He takes the arm because he wants to ask someone what he killed. Because he doesn’t know. And by the way, Will is Mat Damon, okay?

When they are running, running from a tribe. That’s like a few days later.  They find the Chinese Wall and many soldiers were there. Tovan and Will, they decide to surrender to the soldiers on the Wall. Tovan is Pedro Pascal.

The problem is that they arrived when the Chinese are preparing for a battle that happens every 60 years. This battle is against an army of the creatures that Will killed.

And before we continue, I would just like to say thank you to our sponsor, and today’s sponsor OLC Club, your language club. And the OLC Club, they have now this amazing new feature where, when you go the Facebook page and they have now a robot called Tom. And when you go to the page, on Facebook and you say Hello, to Tom. Tom will respond and if you say yes, Tom will actually send you every day some materials for you to learn English. So, for example Tom will ask you if you are a beginner or an intermediate. And if you say, for example that you are a beginner, then Tom will help you learn English as a beginner. He will send you every day new words, and whenever the podcast comes out he will send you the link. And he will also give you some other information. How cool is that! And they are also preparing something really really cool called Drops of English. But now, let’s come back to our movie.

I must say, I loved the images, the photography of the movie. The colors and the details from the soldier’s clothes and from some of the other things we see.  It’s just so amazing. Also the scenes with the hot air balloons, the battles, all the special effects were just great. Well, you guys know I love special effects, right! Were there problems in the plot ? Sure! The movie was not perfect. There is for example no explanation for many things during this movie. For example: why the time between attacks is so long, 60 years. Why Ballard stayed with the Chinese for 25 years but now wants to betray them and take the gunpowder away; who sent the group of soldiers to find the gunpowder.

There are many many questions without answers. And yes, there are many cliché moments inside the movie as well. But if you like good battles or battle scenes and special effects, I am sure you will enjoy this movie.

I don’t want to give you many spoilers, so I will not tell you what happens after they arrive at the Wall. Not in detail anyway. So the Chinese, they debate if they should kill Will and Tovan or not. And they want to understand how Will killed the creature, all alone. Because they know this creatures, they are very hard to kill.

The Chinese army is very well organized. And Will and Tovan are really amazed at how organized they are. how Every group of soldiers has a color. And every group does something different. So, for example the blue group only has women. And they like jump and fight.

And I must say that as a woman I think that it was very nice to see… well now  more and more movies with strong women. Like this one. This leader for the blue group. She becomes something bigger during the story. So it is really really nice to see  slowly women with power, women who can fight. Also being the good ones. Because we are used to see powerful women but usually they are like the bad witch or… well they are bad, usually. If they are powerful, usually women are bad in old movies. And slowly now we see women heroes as well. And I think its amazing. Children need that. They need… Specially young girls, they need to have powerful females to look up to them and say I would like to be as strong as her, as intelligent as her… And this is important.  We also see something else that is very interesting. Because we also get to see a little bit of the capital of China and the young emperor.  Very very quickly. But we get to see them. And so it’s nice to have like this little pick of how life sort of was back then, when they still had an emperor and how the culture and the organization worked.

Good morning, GoT fans! So, how did you survive this week’s episode? And last week’s episode? Man! Every episode now for me is like, wow! And what about you? What do you think of this season so far? We are past the middle of it. Episode 5 already! O my God! Only 2 more episodes to go! I’m happy and I’m excited and so anxious at the same time. Cause it’s almost at the end already! It’s just… 7 episodes is not enough. Not enough. Not when you have a series as great as this one.

We start episode 5 and we see who saved Jamie. I was Bron. And Jamie of course… funny guy, right… he complains to Bron that he could have killed him. Like yeah, no. The dragon would not have killed me. But the way you pulled me into the water I could have died. I’m like, really Jamie? Are you serious? But okay, yeah. So Bron asks him: what were you thinking when you tried to attack a dragon?  And he says he just wanted to end the war. I mean, killing Daennerys would end the war. That’s for sure. Dumb thing to do when there’s a dragon between you and the person you wanna kill, right? And Bron says that with dragons is where their partnership ends. Because he’s not going to seat around and wait for the dragons to kill him. And Jamie is afraid of what will happen when Daennerys decides to use all 3 dragons at full force to really win a battle. Cause now he has seen just how powerful the Dothraki can be. And how powerful one dragon is. So you imagine 3 dragons. It would be horrible, horrible, horrible.

Then we see Tyrion. He’s walking through the battlefield and he sees the destruction that happened and from his face we can see it really…. How can I say… Those guys are Lannister and he’s a Lannister. He probably knew quite a few of them. So he’s not very happy and he was seeing everything from far away and then we see as Dan… of course, so Jamie and Bron they are like on the other side. So they escaped. But wih the people they stayed in the battlefield. Daennerys is like summoning them all to the same place and she gives them 2 choices. They can either join her or die. I mean, it’s not really a  choice, is there? So you either bend the knee and you join my army or you die. And the Tarly, they refuse to kneel. They are like some stubborn little buggers. And  of course, the father especially, he refuses to even let her send him to the Wall, to take the black. Because he says, you are not my queen. So you can’t really send me anywhere.   And Dickon, he says: if you are gonna kill him, you will have to kill me. And yeah, not so smart but okay. And Tyrion, he tries to convince Daennerys to lock them up for a few days . especially the son and then let him think again about what he’s doing. But she’s determined that if she gives them this choice, a lot of people will make that choice and she says she doesn’t want to take prisoners. She doesn’t want to have people  in shakles. Because she’s actually breaking shakles, right. So how is she supposed to have prisoners like that. She decides, okay. You don’t want to join me, I respect that but then Drogon will kill you. And that’s what she does. Because usually people would decapitate, right. But she says well, I’m not doing that. I’m not beheading people. I am burning them. It sort of remembers us of what her father did. I am more and more worried with Daennerys, you know. She’s becoming her father’s daughter more and more over time. Between her and Cersey I don’t know who has caused more trouble with fire. Maybe Cersey. Because of the wildfire. I don’t know. But yeah. Those are 2 crazy ladies. And she says: I’m nothing like Cersey! Yes, you are!

But then again, coming back here to the episode. Daennerys sentenced both Tarlys to death and Drogon does his job and then we see Jamie arriving at Kingslanding. And he and Cersey are talking about the loses and the future and the mercenaries… and Jamie tells Cersey that actually Olenna killed Joffrey. That she was responsible and that she confessed it just before dying. And so, first Cersey does not wanna believe it.   But then thinking better about it she agrees that she was telling the truth when she confessed. And she says (Cersey), she doesn’t think they have any choice but to keep fighting Daennerys because she does not think that Daennerys is just going to forget what happened so far. And Jamie’s not really convinced because he saw what happened, he saw the destruction … so he knows they are going to lose if Daennerys really decides to come in and attack them with full force.

Then we go back to Dragonstone and Drogon is back. Poor Drogon, he’s hurt but he’s doing okay. And we see this amazing scene where Jon Snow is waiting for them and Drogon just keeps approaching, approaching and they are like really face to face. And poor Jon Snow, you can see the guy is shaking and all fibers in his body are telling him: just run, you fool! But he stays. He’s a brave guy. Stupid maybe, but brave. And he stays there and because he does not know he’s a Targaryen right? And he takes his glove of and he lets Drogon smell him and then he touched Drogon and Daennerys I like: what the hell is going on?? Cause yeah, I mean. Drogon is not a friendly type of animal. And so she comes down and she’s: well, aren’t they amazing? And they talk a little bit about how the dragons are her children … but yeah, it was a nice moment seeing Drogon and Jon connecting. It really is. But yes, in that moment she tells Jon that it doesn’t matter how big they get, how scary they are. They are her children. And they really are, because she does not think she can ever have children of her own again.

And then we see an amazing, beautiful, touching reunion. Jorah arrived. She was having a  moment with Jon and then the Dothraki came and said well Khaleesi, this man says he knows you, he’s a friend. Daennerys sees Jorah… we can see like her eyes were watering, she was just so happy that he’s back and he says he’s cured. And he asks if she would have him and then we see Jon and Jorah making acquaintance. To see that as good servant he did what she asked. He found a cure.

Then we go back to Winterfell and Bran, he’s like warging. Apparently he could see what all those crows were seeing. And the crows, of course, they go like beyond the wall. And we see this huge army of White Walkers. It’s just wow! A lot of people. And the crows were flying and seeing where everyone was and what was going on but then, when the Night King, he saw the crows is like he broke the connection.

I’m really curious to see and learn more about the story of the Night King and to see who he really is and … because there has to be a connection with the Starks although he does not look like a proper Stark if you want. He was like a red head. Before the children of the forest, they made him into the Night King. But I don’t know. A lot of people think he actually used to be a Stark. Who knows. George Martin knows.  Maybe. But we will have to wait and see if they tell us this story. Or if they at least give us some explanation on how they are all connected. Because I’m pretty sure he is connected to the Starks. Because he keeps staring at Jon so hard. I don’t know. He sees all those crows and the connection is cut. And he (Bran) then tells the maester they have to send ravens and they send ravens not just to Jon Snow, but apparently they sent ravens to many places telling them: look, they are coming.

And we go to the citadel and the maesters, they are discussing Bran’s message and Sam is there and he’s listening and he’s listening how they talk about this cripple boy who claims he can see through those ravens and blah, blah blah. And of course Sam, he can never keep his mouth shut, right? And he says: are you talking about Bran Stark? Because he is telling the truth. And they go like yeah, maybe yes, maybe no. and he says: Look, you are so powerful and everyone respects what you say. If you tell people, they should believe this story. They are going to believe it. And they are going to prepare. And so this maester, this high maester that Sam is training with. He says : don’t worry, we will get to the bottom of it. We will know for sure because maybe this is just a  plot and we cannot let people use us like that. And yeah, Sam is just getting restless , right? He knows he should be learning more, he should be doing more. Because they are coming. So he’s not very happy when he sees that those maesters they are not really ready to do something.

We go back to Dragonstone and we see Tyrion and Varys talking about Daennerys and what she did and they are of course worried because like me, they see that she’s becoming more and more like her father. She’s ruthless, she is not afraid to kill people if she has to. Even though… yes, she’s not crazy. So she’s not just killing people for the pleasure of killing. But she’s not afraid to do that. She’s not afraid of making tough decisions. Varys was holding the message that Bran sent and so now Jon finds out Arya is alive and she is in Winterfell; Bran is alive. He’s in Winterfell. But he’s not exactly very happy even though he should be, right. But he’s not happy because of the message that Bran sent. That he saw all those White Walkers waking and coming to Eastwatch. And so they start discussing what they can do, right. Because they need to unite fronts with Cersey to be able to do that. And at least make a cease fire because they cannot fight the walkers and Cersey at the same time. There’s just not enough people to do that. So they decide to go beyond the wall, capture a walker, bring it back to the south and show it to Cersey. So she can believe they exist and maybe then she will agree to a cease fire.

And so they are planning on how they are gonna do this. Tyrion is going to Kingslanding and he’s gonna talk to Jamie so that Jamie can talk to Cersey. Because Cersey only listens to Jamie. Sort of.  And someone has to go beyond the wall to capture a white. So Jorah says : if you allow me, I will go. And the Jon says: the free folk, the wildlings, they can help but they will not help Sir Jorah. So I have to go with them. And at that moment you see like… I mean, when Jorah said he was going, Khaleesi already was not very happy. But the when Jon says that, you can see like her heart is racing and she’s like oh my God, Oh my God. He might go and never come back. Is like you can see all the thoughts going through her mind while she was trying to find the right word to say please don’t go. And she says: Well, but I didn’t  give you permission to go. And the he’s like: I’m sorry  your Grace but I don’t need your permission. I’m a king. I can go. There’s nothing she can say right? Then he says: When I came here I was trusting someone I did not know. Now I need you to trust me.

And of course she knows there’s nothing else she could say than just farewell.

Then we go back to Winterfell again and we see how the people in the North, they are getting anxious because  the winter is there and Jon Snow is not and they are putting pressure on Sansa saying: Maybe we should not have chosen Jon Snow, we should have chosen you. And we see Arya, she’s always observing. And she’s not very happy to see how Sansa is dealing with this whole situation and she suspects that Sansa has other intentions. That she actually wants to ‘dethrone’ Jon Snow if you want and she wants to be Lady Stark. She wants to be the one commanding or head of the family.

And the we see again Tyrion and Davos, they arrive at Kingslanding. In this episode we keep coming and going and cutting through scenes. Davos goes to find Gendry . Yay! Gendry is back! And Bron takes Jamie to the dungeon to talk to Tyrion. Of course Jamie does not know  he’s going there to talk to Tyrion, otherwise he would not have gone. So Tyrion and Jamie, they talk. Tyrion presents to Jamie this idea they have. If she agrees, we will have proof. Because in the mean time Jon Snow and the others; they are going  to Eastwatch  to catch a white. Then we see how Davos and Gendry, they go to the boat and then some soldiers come and Davos pays them because Davos is not really a soldier. He does not like to fight and Gendry is … he does not know how to fight with a sword but he has this huge hammer. When the soldiers were leaving, they see Tyrion coming and they go: we were looking for someone just like you some time ago. Then Davos tries to pay them off but of course this time they’re not taking money. So, Gendry kills them.

We see how Jamie goes to talk to Cersey about Tyrions preposition. No, proposition. And she actually takes it quite well. She’s not crazy. She’s not screaming. She knew, of course, that Tyrion had been there and everything that had happened, sort of. She did not know what they talked about. But she knew they were talking. And she asks if Jamie is going to punish Bron for betraying him and taking him to see Tyrion. And she says: Well, maybe we should listen to what Daennerys has to say. And the she tells Jamie why. She needs time because she is pregnant again. She is expecting a  baby. Jamie’s baby. He’s moved by that. Because this time he really is going to be the father, not just the uncle. And he says: Well, people re not gonna like this idea of us having a baby. She says… just looks at him like: who cares, right. I’m the queen. I can do whatever I want. And then they say that Lannister phrase: The lions do not concern themselves with the opinions of the sheep. They can do whatever they want.

The we go already back to Dragonstone and I mean. Things are moving so fast now.  We don’t see people traveling anymore. It’s just like they  appear in places. So it’s very confusing to have any idea how much time is passing by while all of this is happening. Because traveling, even with the boats. It should take some time. But things are just happening fast. No time here!   We see Davos and Gendry. They are back in Dragonstone already.  And Davos is taking Gendry to see Jon Snow because they just arrived and he keeps telling Gendry: look, let me do the talking. They should not know who you are. But of course, when Gendry see Jon he says : I’m Robert Baratheon’s son. Our fathers, they used to be best friends. Davos goes like:  Okay, he was supposed to keep that as a secret because all Robert’s children are supposed to be dead and Davos saved him. And, question here. What happened to Theon? I mean, we just saw him arriving. We never saw him leaving. No one is talking about Theon anymore.  Good question. Is like people just forgot he even exists. No idea. But okay. Back here to what happened in this episode.

We see Jon and Gendry talking. And Gendry is going with Jon beyond the wall. Then we see the group leaving and Daennerys saying goodbye to everyone. And Jorah wanted to say something to her but then Jon and the others arrived. So he has to cut it or hold it for the next encounter maybe. So yes, when Jon is leaving he says: at least if I don’t come back you don’t have to deal with the King in the North anymore. And she says: but I’m kinda getting used to him. By now. So yay.. love is in the air… yes, something like this. We will see. And poor Jorah. He loves Daennerys but sorry men! The Targaryen family. They tend to stick together!

Then, really really great moment! And I a not sure how many people actually have understood just how important this next moment is. We see Sam and Gilly and they are in the Citadel and they are talking and they are reading. Sam is copying those scrolls and Gilly is reading a book from the maester Highsepton Maynard. This guy just wrote everything down. And she’s like: do you know how many steps and do you know how many windows and blah, blah, blah. But then, she’s like: Sam, what is an annulment. And my ears were already ringing like I annulment, annulment. Did anyone say annulment? Because an annulment is what people used to do or maybe the even still do. When someone is married and they don’t want to be married anymore. It’s like to cancel a marriage license or something. Because he wrote here about a guy named … but she does not say Raeger, she says Ragger. Maybe that’s why a lot of people didn’t really pay attention because eit really seemed like small talk. And that is the thing with GoT. So much important information is given to us as a small talk it’s amazing. That’s why I watched now the first season 5 times and every time I see I go like: O my God! I did not see this before. It’s amazing.  We see how Gilly is reading this book that Raeger got an annulment when they were in Dorne and the same maester already married him to someone else. But, when she was going to read who this someone else was, Sam just stands up and he’s fed up with this whole situation and he decides to do something. What does Sam do? He goes int the library. He takes all the scrolls and books. I think he knows talk about white walkers and the long night. And he takes a wagon and they leave. So that’s where we are right now. Sam is just fed up. He knows they don’t have time for him to complete his training. He needs to learn and he needs to learn fast because they are coming. He needs to find an answer. And yes, big big hopes for Sam there. Because he really has to find something to help the other save the 7 Kingdoms. And then, as they were leaving, Gilly asks him: are you sure? Because you always wanted to be a maester. And then he says something that his father told him some time ago. So this makes me wonder if he already knows his father is dead or not. He says: I am tired of reading about the achievements of better man. So he thinks he has to start acting as well. I couldn’t agree more. But still. It made me think if the maester had a chance to tell him what happened to his father and brother.

Then we go back to Winterfell again and we see how Arya sees Litlefinger plotting and talking to people and she sees as the maester gives him a scroll and Littlefinger even asks him : are you sure this is the only copy? And he hides it in his room so Arya goes there and she finds what it was. She finds the scroll. She takes it. And as Arya leaves the bedroom , we see that Littlefinger was actually there, in the shadows. Seeing. Because he was expecting Arya to do that. What do you guys think? What sort of game is Littlefinger playing now? Cause that guy, he … his plans were if not interrupted, they were changed when Arya and Bran arrived at Winterfell. I’m curious to see how this one will end up. Although I already saw some spoilers and if they are true it’s very  interesting stuff that should happen in the last episode of this season.

And then, last scenes. We see the group arriving at the wall. At Eastwatch. And the Hound and the others, they are already there too. And they are like in prison. Because they were not sure what to do with them. And Gendry tells them they should not trust the guys from the Brotherhood because they sold him to Melisander. But they talk and talk but they decide okay. They need people anyway, right? Jon decides they are all on the same side because they are breathing, right. So it’s basically the dead against the living. He decides they are all going beyond the wall and the Hound and the others , they are part of his group now. And then as the episode ends, we see them going. The door opens and we see the group entering the terrain beyond the wall.

Like I said before. I’m so excited and this season is just so amazing but at the same time episode 5 has finished. We only have 2 more episodes left. It’s not enough. But yes, this season is just so so great. What did you guys think? Did you like this episode? I loved this episode. I must say. I really really loved this episode and I’m pretty sure next episode is going to be even better.

As always, thank you for listening, and please just give us a thumbs up, like and share and send it to your friends… use it in your classes with your students…  okay guys? And I will talk to you next week on the next episode. Bye, bye!
